Comments with business names
Do you allow comments with business names on your blog? I have received more and more comments from people giving their business names as their “name” in the comments. It feels a bit weird since it’s no longer personal. Do they only comment to get more exposure with their business names?
And those commenting with one business name but links to another business, what’s the deal? It doesn’t even have a purpose! And since a while back I have been deleting comments with link-signatures that contained more than one link. It just look so messy.
Is it time that I come up with a comment policy or would that just be egoistic of me? Like “if you don’t have a weblog or don’t want to link to it, leave it blank”?
Do you have a comment policy on your blog?

I allow people to link to a specific page of their site (corporate or personal), but not to give other names than their real name… if they want a text link ad, i refer them to… TLA.com, or add a nofollow.
IMHO, that’s abusing the purpose of the i-follow movement.

I generally ban them, I refer them to one of my other sites if they want to advertise on my blog :)

I really like the ideas in the other comments. I think I might start doing that. I don’t really have a comment policy, but like you I get annoyed by the fact that people just comment to get a link out there instead of saying something meaningful.

I would go by the quality of the comments as the sole criteria to decide on whether a commentator is to be allowed on one’s site or not. If the comments are enhancing the discussions and contributing to the growth of the various commentators, what else would the blogger want?

I don’t have a comment policy on my blog. My blog is still pretty new, so I am still at the stage of being happy to get any comments at all! So far, I have had to delete one comment from my blog, that’s all. Hopefully, it will stay that way for a long time in my blog.

I don’t allow them. I say use your name or don’t include a link. The comments are usually worthless if they done put a real name - but if it actually is a good comment I will include it and just delete the link. I will let them include relevant links in the content of the comment.

This is something that seems to bug a lot of blog owners. As a blog reader and commentator I feel that the only cause for concern would be when the comments have so substance or are meaningless. Then you have the option of deleting them or not approving them. However,if what i say contributes to your discussion in any way, why would you mind me leaving a link on your page? Seems to me that no one loses out.

I don’t care what people put in the name field, but I’m not a big fan of manual link signatures. I’ve always clipped those out, not that many people use them. I’ve never had a complaint, apparently because the people using them are just passing through.
But if you want to put a business name in the name field, that’s fine. It’s your identity, you can do with it what you please.

A few have slipped through but I ban them completely. I even have a guy bugging the hell out of me by emailing asking why his comment isn’t showing up. I have explained to him I’m not advertising his business for free-yet he won’t give up. I’ve stopped responding to his emails.

If they are LEGIT comments with actual words that say something about the post the way a normal commenter would then yes I let them through, but I have the delinker so I use that on them so they don’t get a link. They’re delinked right away. if it looks like a spam comment then they’re thrown into the spam bucket where they belong.
