Getting a dog: What breed?

If you are thinking about getting a dog, you have probably also though about what breed you might want to have. But think twice before you decide. A little tiny dog need just as much care as a big dog! I know this from personal experience since I have one big dog (that now lives with my mom and dad), a mix of vorsteh, rottweiler and labrador and one tiny one, a mix of poodle, tibetan spaniel and papillon.

So before you decide which breed that suits you try out the Dog Breed Selector. You will be asked to answer a few questions and then the generator will give you a list with the best breeds for you based on your answers. It’s a really good place to start!

I definitely prefer the larger dogs to the smaller ones! The giant breed dogs actually are the laziest, usually!

Most dog lovers that I know, tend to stay with generations of one breed. I personally have experimented with a few, and though my present circumstances preclude it, I would opt for a Doberman any time.

big or small i like dogs that don’t bark 24 hours a day. the less noise the better. speaking of big dogs though, does anyone know the name of the breed that litearlly looks like a small bear? i mean the thing was huge! it could’ve been giving rides to sumo wrestlers (maybe that’s a stretch)

That’s a great tool. My favorite two dogs came up as a match for me. The first was a Labrador and the second was a Golden Retriever. I’m waiting to have kids though so they can pick out their first puppy.

The best breed of dog is:

    MUTT.

Yup. You read that right: MUTT. As in “I’ve been abandoned, I need a home, but I have no idea about my pedigree.”

We have had a series of MUTTS over the 22 years we have been married and they have all been like our additional children: Spoiled, pampered, and as much a part of the family as the human kids. In fact, our current MUTTS, Buddy and Sophie, are so spoiled that it is almost humiliating. Sophie runs the house and Buddy takes orders from her, even though he is older.

Both of them were adopted from Pets ‘n’ Pals, a local nonprofit shelter that never puts animals down if they are not adopted. They have a website where they feature all of their current “guests,” displaying a picture and as much info. as they have about the animal. They are very picky about who adopts, requiring that the adopting family prove they have a fence, bring in other animals to see if they socialize well, etc.

Check out local shelters in your area . . . the best way to find a loving family pet is to adopt one who might otherwise spend his/her life in a cage — or, worse, be euthanized.
