Then you have done something wrong. Perhaps you have the new sound file in the wrong format? Perhaps you should try to reboot?

I have followed the instructions above but still can not change the sound. When I go back into sounds to check it, I click on mail notification and it is the new sound there, but when I recieve mail it is the default sound…

Ohhh thanks for this. I have Gmail and I kinda miss the funny got mail notifications from the AOL days.
