How to track your Blogger statistics with Google
Google owns Blogger (Blogspot), everyone knows that. But we all Blogger bloggers miss the statistics module that for example WordPress.com blogs already have. Since they’re in the same family I think it would be a good idea to implement Google Analytics with Blogger. But you never know, it might show in the future.
However, if you want to track your visitors on your Blogger/Blogspot without putting up a linkback-image to the tracking-service on your blog (that’s so 90′s!) then Google Analytics is the tool for you.
Since everyone doesn’t know how to do it, here is a little short tutorial for the newbies:
Track your Blogger (Blogspot) statistics with Google Analytics
How to set it up
- Go to Google Analytics to sign up or log in.
- When logged in, choose to create a new account (click on the menu next to “My Analytics Accounts” at the top right of the page and choose “Create a new account”) and follow the steps. When you get to “Tracking Code“, open up a new window/tab and log in to your Blogger account.
- When logged in you will see your Dashboard, click “Design” under the name of your blog and you will arrive to Page Elements.
- Then choose “Edit HTML” in the horizontal menu.
- Take a look in the textbox and find the </head> tag.
- Now you have to copy and paste the code from Google Analytics right BEFORE the </head> tag, then click “Save Template“.
- Then click “Save and Finish” at the bottom of the Google Analytics page and you’re done!
To check your Blogger statistics, you just have to click on your account on the first page of Google Analytics. If it says “Tracking Unknown” in the status column, even after 24h (you have to wait a day until it starts tracking), you have done something wrong.
Also, you might want to get your blog “Google verified” (How to add and verify a site on Google) so your blog gets crawled – your chances to show up on search results increases. Here is a tutorial for you WordPress.com users.

Thanks so much for this! Made the process so easy and clear cut. I love your blog, I’m so glad I stumbled upon it .
I tried to follow your instructions but it seems Blogger has changed since it was written…you wouldn’t happen to have an updated version?
Jody, it worked for me. But i had to do it a bit different than stated above. I had to go to Layout, Page Elements and then put the code in the footer as she says.
That should work, works for me. Google Analytics takes 24 hours to get the data though, just in case you weren’t sure.
Thank you, that was VERY helpful! I don’t think I would have been able to figure that out on my own. May I link back to your article?
Thanks for this info, it was most helpful!
So far, so good. Thanks for the clean steps to add the function.
I can’t seem to find the “footer” in the template. Can you please tell me where this is or what the HTML tag of the footer should look like? Can i just add a DIV tage with ID=”footer”? Thanks in advanced.
[...] info on setting-up Google Analytics, see http://www.infektia.net/how-to-track-your-blogger-statistics-with-google/. Depending on the version of Blogger you are using you might have to use the alternate method [...]
Thanks for the great post. I have a blog on blogger and didn’t realise you could add stats until now that is
That was most helpful, I got it working in 15 min,
T H A N K Y O U
Thanks a load! Was very useful. :)
@Anomolli:
You don’t need to edit the template directly. Go to:
Dashboard–>Layout–>Page Elements–>scroll down.
Click “add a gadget” (at the bottom). Find “HTML/Javascript” gadget in the list, add it and paste into the textarea.
Good luck,
Kairos
Hi! Thanks you loads, it was very helpful! :]
Anyways take care~~
Thanks for the tip. I just employed your advice and hopefully I’ll see some improvement over time.
THANKS AGAIN!
That is very helpful as I have not been tracking my stats as I didn’t realize it was this easy.
5 minutes to reach the goal
perfect
thankyou
awesome. thank you so much. I wasnt able to get it to work with the gadget so I edited the html instead and it seems to work fine
Thank you so, so, so much for that! Had no clue how to deal with any of the codes – the whole thing scared me to death. Thank for this great easy instruction how not to make your blog ugly with a counter! Woooopeeeey!
This was SO VERY helpful and it worked! Thanks a ton!
Thank you soooooooo much! so so so much
I just couldnt leave your website before saying that I really enjoyed the quality information you offer to your visitors… Will be back often to check up on new stuff you post!
Wow, this was so easy and step-by-step perfectly explained. Thanks so much!
that was very helpful, thank you
helpful content
i used it with my blogger account..
thanks
Thanks :). I was very sad to find out thta Blogger didn’t have the stats and tracking like WordPress does (since I’m new to Blogger). So I’ll see how it works out, I just finished ^^.
thanks for the advice.. it`s very usefull
Why didn´t I just asked that from in the first place… all those hours of $∞§@©… Thank you.
I just set this up and have not seen the results yet, but was wondering if it will apply only to posts moving forward, or will it track my older posts. Anyone know? Thanks!
It will take up to a 24 hours before you see some results. It will track all your posts! New and old!
What if I don’t have “layout” , only “template” in my dashboard ? :(
That would be the same thing I guess…
Thanks so much! Very helpful! Don’t know if it works yet, have to wait for more than 23 hours, but I’ve got my fingers crossed!
Very helpful info, thanks!
Update. It definitely takes 24hours for the Status to update. The Analytics page at Google is really nice. It has some good stats.
thanks! very helpful!
thx 4 the info
Thanks for this info.
Started hours ago and could add tracking because of you ;-)
i use these and they are very helpful, but i have to admit, i created a wordpress blog and their stats are really awesome. They give you a breakdown of each page that was hit, so you can see where your peeps go.
Google analytics does not tell me exactly which pages were hit. I wish there were stats for blogger like there are for wordpress
Google Analytics with Blogger does show me the pages and counts. I like it better than WordPress, it seems very substantial to me with all the worldwide stats & stuff.
thanks for the info was even easier to follow than googles help page!!
Hi, I found that I had to add a module, a “gadget” for this to work, rather than in the main HTML code area. Good info. Thanks. WW2S
Thanks this was very helpful.
thanks, it helped…
is there a way, i can show these analytics results on my blog. i wanted to display visitors count, bounce rate, etc.. that would be more helpful as well. warm regards, lala
Hey lala!
Check out this article: How To Display & Share Google Analytics Statistics (Web & RSS Feed) – http://blog.taragana.com/index.php/archive/how-to-display-share-google-analytics-statistics-web-rss-feed/
Hope that helps!
Malin you rock. You’re super helpful! x
Thanks! I’m happy you liked the tutorial! ^^
thanks malin,
for helping me again, all make sense for me right now, exactly what i was hoping / searching for……
You’re welcome! :D
Thanks, that should help alot!
Thanks Malin, I was searching for it and found your blog. Thanks for sharing this. It should help me.
I guess that the comments here are getting a bit repetitive – but thanks a lot. :-) Great help for a newbie blogger.
Chiming in with everyone else to say thanks. I don’t know if it will work or not, but I’m hoping it does.
Thank you very much for a great tutorial!
Så lite så! :D Tur man kan hjälpa någon! :)
Really really helpful!!! Thanks……
Not sure if you will see this but here goes; I like the info but I wish that it not be a page element that my visitors see. Is there a way to view my stats another way?
I don’t understand your question. Could you explain it further?
I have the problem that I can’t save the code. Blogger always wants me to put something into the title column, but I dont’t want that on my blog. Any ideas?
That’s strange. When I try it. It can be saved without entering something in the title column.
Thanks for the reply, but it’s no longer an issue, blogger fixed this problem. It was a general problem for a couple of weeks and could be worked around by entering into the title column.
This is what had to be entered (without the spaces) “” I forgot that websites don’t show this code, therefore this workaround worked in the first place and the above comment doesn’t make much sense.
