How to track your Blogger statistics with Google
Google owns Blogger (Blogspot), everyone knows that. But we all Blogger bloggers miss the statistics module that for example WordPress.com blogs already have. Since they’re in the same family I think it would be a good idea to implement Google Analytics with Blogger. But you never know, it might show in the future.
However, if you want to track your visitors on your Blogger/Blogspot without putting up a linkback-image to the tracking-service on your blog (that’s so 90′s!) then Google Analytics is the tool for you.
Since everyone doesn’t know how to do it, here is a little short tutorial for the newbies:

How to set it up
- Go to Google Analytics to sign up or log in.
- When logged in, choose to create a new account (click on the menu next to “My Analytics Accounts” at the top right of the page and choose “Create a new account”) and follow the steps. When you get to “Tracking Code“, open up a new window/tab and log in to your Blogger account.
- When logged in you will see your Dashboard, click “Design” under the name of your blog and you will arrive to Page Elements.
- Then choose “Edit HTML” in the horizontal menu.
- Take a look in the textbox and find the </head> tag.
- Now you have to copy and paste the code from Google Analytics right BEFORE the </head> tag, then click “Save Template“.
- Then click “Save and Finish” at the bottom of the Google Analytics page and you’re done!
To check your Blogger statistics, you just have to click on your account on the first page of Google Analytics. If it says “Tracking Unknown” in the status column, even after 24h (you have to wait a day until it starts tracking), you have done something wrong.
Also, you might want to get your blog “Google verified” (How to add and verify a site on Google) so your blog gets crawled – your chances to show up on search results increases. Here is a tutorial for you WordPress.com users.

I tried to follow your instructions but it seems Blogger has changed since it was written…you wouldn’t happen to have an updated version?
Jody, it worked for me. But i had to do it a bit different than stated above. I had to go to Layout, Page Elements and then put the code in the footer as she says.
That should work, works for me. Google Analytics takes 24 hours to get the data though, just in case you weren’t sure.

I can’t seem to find the “footer” in the template. Can you please tell me where this is or what the HTML tag of the footer should look like? Can i just add a DIV tage with ID=”footer”? Thanks in advanced.

You don’t need to edit the template directly. Go to:
Dashboard–>Layout–>Page Elements–>scroll down.
Click “add a gadget” (at the bottom). Find “HTML/Javascript” gadget in the list, add it and paste into the textarea.

It will take up to a 24 hours before you see some results. It will track all your posts! New and old!
What if I don’t have “layout” , only “template” in my dashboard ? :(

Update. It definitely takes 24hours for the Status to update. The Analytics page at Google is really nice. It has some good stats.

Started hours ago and could add tracking because of you ;-)
i use these and they are very helpful, but i have to admit, i created a wordpress blog and their stats are really awesome. They give you a breakdown of each page that was hit, so you can see where your peeps go.
Google analytics does not tell me exactly which pages were hit. I wish there were stats for blogger like there are for wordpress
Google Analytics with Blogger does show me the pages and counts. I like it better than WordPress, it seems very substantial to me with all the worldwide stats & stuff.

Not sure if you will see this but here goes; I like the info but I wish that it not be a page element that my visitors see. Is there a way to view my stats another way?

I have the problem that I can’t save the code. Blogger always wants me to put something into the title column, but I dont’t want that on my blog. Any ideas?
That’s strange. When I try it. It can be saved without entering something in the title column.
Thanks for the reply, but it’s no longer an issue, blogger fixed this problem. It was a general problem for a couple of weeks and could be worked around by entering into the title column.
This is what had to be entered (without the spaces) “” I forgot that websites don’t show this code, therefore this workaround worked in the first place and the above comment doesn’t make much sense.
