Top Commentators WordPress plugin won’t increase your comments!

Increase Comments with the Show Top Commentators WordPress Plugin so they say. But I can tell you the truth! If you have a blog like mine that’s about little of this and a little of that, it won’t increase your comments to install the Top Commentators Plugin!

I had it installed for several months and all it did was to clutter my sidebar. Maybe it works if you have an extremely popular blog (high amount of visitors) and people with less popular blogs comment just to get some link juice from you. So if you don’t have at least 5000 unique visitors a day, I would say - Screw it!

On a big blog many people only comment (and mostly useless comments) to get some free link juice from the Top Commentators list. Would I like to have tons of useless comments on my blog? No thank you. I would rather have zero comments instead of tons of useless ones. I’m not here to suck up for my visitors, and to tell the truth, us “content with our blogs” bloggers doesn’t have to suck up to the bigger ones to just get some attention!

    Malin,

I’m sorry you feel that it didn’t work for you.

I know from experience it can increase comments, but sometimes it requires a little extra work. One thing I’ve found that helps is to turn it into sort of a competition. Reward your top commentators with an outbound link once a month (maybe at the beginning or end of the month) featuring a popular post they did. Another method I’ve found that works is to make sure to comment several times a week on your top commentators blogs to return the favor. This will encourage them to come back and comment more.

Overall, a blogs value is definitely not determined by comments received, but it can be fun to get them. Sometimes it just requires a little extra work, but is made possible with this plugin.

Hopefully some of the above works, I wish you the best!

P.S. The CAPTCHA you have below can be a big comment deterent as well. I would recommend using the Math Equation Comment Plugin.

Kyle Eslick: Thanks for the tips Kyle! Maybe I’ll try it out! And I agree that the Captcha thing is quite annoying. Thanks for commenting!

I’d rather take one “good” comment than 15 “bad” ones, which is the risk with a competition - in this case, if you’re a newcomer and are out to make cash from your blog a “free” link from a PR5 blog is worth a lot… and some people have no scruples.

It all depends on what you want to do with your blog and why you blog at all. I quite appreciate your feeling at this point of time but, once more people start visiting you, you may well change your mind.
